Escondido
Located 30 miles northeast of downtown San Diego and 20 minutes from the coast, Escondido is a sprawling community of about 144,000, offering very diverse neighborhoods and a wide range of housing options. The temperatures can be relatively warm in the summer months.
This foothills community, which is becoming known for its wineries and craft breweries, is also home to the San Diego Wild Animal Park and many other attractions. It has a charming historic downtown and a performing arts theater. Escondido is also home to the Lawrence Welk Theater, which stages performances throughout the year. There is an annual Renaissance Faire which attracts spectators from throughout the county.
The southern edge of Escondido borders Lake Hodges, a popular fishing spot. Residents also have plenty of golfing, hiking and biking options, and a host of sports leagues at their doorstep. Big name department stores are found at the expansive North County Fair shopping mall. There is a brand new hospital and state of the arts medical center.
The area is served by the Escondido Union School District, the Escondido Union High School District and the San Pasqual Union School District, and Palomar community college. Cal State University is nearby in San Marcos. Business hubs are within easy reach, in neighboring Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch and Sorrento Valley.
